Timeline

3 Months

In 2022, I led design of the Tele-MANAS National Website - a critical platform bridging the gap in mental healthcare access across India. As the sole designer, the responsibility was both challenging and rewarding, requiring me to translate the needs of millions into an intuitive and accessible user experience.

This project represented a unique intersection of creativity, technical compliance, and cultural sensitivity, where accessibility standards like GIGW (Guidelines for Indian Government Websites) guided every design decision. Through rigorous research and iterative design, I crafted a platform that empowers users to access mental health support with ease.

The problem

Bridging Mental Health Accessibility Gaps in India

With 53 Tele-MANAS cells, 23 Mentoring Institutes, and 5 Regional Coordinating Centers spread across India, the Tele-MANAS programme required a unified digital platform to consolidate information, resources, and access points.

Challenges Identified:

  • Users struggled to find consolidated resources on mental health services and programme coverage.
  • A wide range of users, including those with disabilities or limited technical skills, needed an intuitive and accessible platform (especially since the cause is Mental Health)
  • Creating equal visibility for every state’s involvement posed a unique design challenge.
  • Requirement from Ministry is that the website should look consistent with other Ministry websites. (not just in terms of colors)
  • Incorporating the tricolor of the Indian flag and the Tele-MANAS logo while maintaining usability.
  • Repeated review sessions with ministry officials and Apex Centers necessitated significant iterations under tight timelines.
The solution

A Comprehensive, Accessible, and Inclusive Platform

The Tele-MANAS National Website was designed to serve as the central hub for the programme, offering information, services, and engagement opportunities while ensuring inclusivity and accessibility.

Key Features:

  1. Informative Sections
    • Programme Background, objectives, and key stakeholders.
    • Mental health materials, IEC content, government initiatives, and collaboration details.
    • Interactive dashboard showcasing calls answered, programme coverage, and engagement statistics.
  2. State Representation
    • Scrolling state emblems in the footer to represent every state’s involvement.
    • State-specific resources and coverage details available through localized sections.
  3. Accessibility Features
    • Dyslexia-friendly fonts and screen reader compatibility.
    • Adjustable font sizes and contrast modes for enhanced readability.
  4. Prominent Calls-to-Action
    • Toll-free number prominently displayed for easy access.
    • Links to the Tele-MANAS app for additional support and services.
  5. Dynamic Content
    • Photo and video galleries showcasing programme milestones.
    • News updates and announcements.
  6. Collaboration Highlights
    • Detailed contact information for Tele-MANAS Apex Centers and programme collaborators.
    • Insights into partnerships with Mentoring Institutes and Regional Coordinating Centers.
the Approach

Compliance with GIGW 3.0

Designing the Tele-MANAS National Website required a strategic, user-first approach to balance technical constraints with creative problem-solving.

  • Conducted in-depth research to understand diverse user needs, including accessibility requirements and regional representation.
  • Created multiple prototypes and iterated designs based on multi-level feedback from ministry officials and Apex Centers.
  • Followed GIGW standards, ensuring the site is accessible to users with disabilities.
  • Integrated the Indian tricolor subtly and aligned it with the Tele-MANAS logo’s green and blue palette.
the impact

Balancing Usability, Accessibility, and Branding

The Tele-MANAS National Website has transformed mental healthcare accessibility across India, becoming a cornerstone of the programme's success.

  • Over 1,651,000 calls answered, demonstrating the demand for and effectiveness of the toll-free helpline.
  • 2 lakh+ website visits, reflecting the platform’s reach and utility.
  • Every state represented through emblems and localized information, fostering inclusivity.
  • Recognized by national and international outlets for its impact and innovative design.
  • Seamlessly accessible across devices, ensuring reach to users in remote areas with varying technology access.

By addressing core challenges and designing with empathy, the Tele-MANAS National Website is not just a platform but a lifeline, making mental healthcare accessible and actionable for millions across India.
